This weeks club reviews are full of frustration & mediocrity. Read on my brave pioneers of Second Life clubbing.

The Butterfly Effect Club & Shopping Mall (Of Course) (M)

There are butterflies everywhere. Butterfly poofers. Butterfly decorations. Butterflies flying all over the fucking place. It’s like some sort of strange b movie attack in the middle of a mall.

OMG NOO NOT THE BUTTERFLIES! AHHHH!!!

I was greeted as soon as I walked onto the dance floor. I was also instantly asked if I wanted to join their group. I don’t take random group invites. Especially from places I have been at all of a few seconds. Let me finish rezzing in & actually look at your place. Then I’ll decide if I actually want to add my name to your group.

It is a shame that a cool concept of a club revolving around butterfly decor would be stuck smack dab in the middle of a mall. Butterflies need open spaces. Gardens. Trees. They don’t need to be floating around a shopping area taking up space. Good idea poor execution.

There were a lot of stores that were empty. If you needed a small place to peddle your wares then there’s your chance.

Meh.

Hotlanta Blues (M)

The teleport to this club lands you directly outside of its front doors. Nice since I am not forced to walk through a shopping district to actually figure out where you are. It’s a typical warehouse club with typical blues or blues related decorations. The type of things that you will find in various other clubs in Second Life.

I was instantly greeted upon entering the door. There was small chit-chat but nothing major going on for me. The employees of the club were trying to get people riled up & talkative by speaking & with gestures. Yes..the dreaded gestures. I am happy that they were at least trying to get conversations started.

I must mention that the place was absolutely PACKED. Hardcore packed. Wall to wall dancing people everywhere. For all of its faults (typical decorations that don’t make it stand out) it’s nice to at least see a large group of people in once spot not complaining about lag but just dancing. Listening to music & dancing.

***QUESTION***

Do a lot of club employees/owners/DJs use gestures as a way to fill the conversation void. Or to try to pump the crowd up?

Duh..answer is YES. We really need to find a new way to get people excited to be someplace. Get conversations started. Help people to have fun. “Woooooo” or the likes when it comes to gestures just isn’t cutting it. It’s not needed. Be creative.

Usually, at this point in time, I throw in some great picture related to the club reviews. Well..I can’t. Second Life is being a total BITCH right now. I can’t teleport anywhere to take a picture. Nor can I attach anything onto myself. (I currently have no hair or shoes. Sexy isn’t it baby.) When I write I write. I am in the writing zone. Then I go back & take a picture of something I thought was interested when it isn’t so crowded. One thing at a time. So,for your enjoyment,here is me sticking my tongue out.

OK. There really is no vacation for my liver. I’ll just go with “I wanted to see a pretty place to take pictures on Second Life while telling my liver it’s going to be alright.”

Yeah. That works.

To give myself a break I decided to take some really pretty pictures at a place called “Dark Moon“.  I recommend checking them out as there is a variety of things to see & do as well as click on for information on mythical education.

The Badgers Are Friendly. I Hope!

When you first teleport in please be sure to pick up a notecard. It will explain the rules (Private voice chatting only, no loud gestures, etc.) as well as things to check out during your visit. I read, checked out the mystical cave, & studied a pack of wolves during my visit. (Lucky for me they weren’t hungry).

Best way to view the land is to use their recommended windlight settings. (If you don’t have it automatically appear or get no pop up asking if you want to allow the windlight settings they use “Under A Yellow Moon”.)

I Hope This Doesn't Affect My Allergies.

What impresses me the most isn’t just the fact that the place is gorgeous & there is no shopping (NO SHOPPING!!!)  but the rules that they have set in place. No overt public sex, restriction of loud gestures, no leashes/collars/gorean rp, private voice chat. They are trying to do their best to keep it a serene & reflective area. Highly recommend coming with a date as there is dancing in various areas as well as romantic spots that go with the romantic setting.

I think this has given my liver enough of a break. Time for a cocktail.

You can follow some or all of these to make for a fun night of drinking & wandering Second Life. I made the key words in each BOLD to help with easy referencing while playing.

When someone mentions LAG take a DRINK

If you try to teleport to a destination & you don’t end up where you intended (Won’t let you teleport, you end up at an info hub) take a SHOT

If you crash & have to restart any Second Life viewer then DRINK FROM THE BOTTLE (You deserve it.)

If you are at a club & someone uses a gesture that says “WOOOOOOOOOOOO”  or your screen becomes cluttered with gestures take a DRINK

If you are at a club & someone tells the DJ “OMG This is my FAVORITE SONG!!” or something to that effect take a SHOT (This could prove to be hurtful if you follow this one.)

While wandering a G area you happen to run into people who are either half-naked OR slave/master who are completely decked out in gear with the slave kneeling. DRINK FROM THE BOTTLE (Then just walk away man…walk away…)

While at someones home you are stuck watching them move furniture around for at least a  half an hour TAKE A SHOT then RESIST THE URGE TO VIRTUAL PUNCH THEM.

Random IM while in a store/park/etc. that involves the words “want to have sex” take a SHOT. If it involves randomly getting hit on then just take a DRINK.

Random breedable pet in a setting where they don’t fit in (Sex club, clothing store, museum…you get the picture) TAKE A DRINK then RESIST THE URGE TO PUNT THE ANIMAL.

Anytime anyone asks you to go shopping with them TAKE A SHO…NO A DRINK…Wait a minute. This happens all the time. If you actually cave in and go TAKE A DRINK. If you say “No thank you” & don’t cave then TAKE A SHOT & give yourself a pat on the virtual back. Good job fellow avie. Good job.

The Profile  Drinking Game!

Rules

1. Be sure to have booze while you play. Booze is fun!

2. Recommended for two or more players (so judging whats the funniest is easier)

3. NEVER share the name of the person you are looking at and NEVER EVER harass anyone. This is just checking out people’s profiles. It is not meant to be malicious. If your profile is open for all to see then we are allowed to look at it.

4. Pick a word to use in the Second Life search in-world. Go to profiles. Find the funniest profile you can using the word you picked.

5. Only use the profile line that comes up in the search. Searching though the entire profile takes too damn long & isn’t as much fun as a random word hit.

6. Hilarious use of the word in profile – Drink

7. Profile line using your word that you cannot stop laughing at – Shot

8. Have fun!

Here are some great examples of what lines made me die of laughter while playing today.

(Actually I wasn’t looking for one. Sorry.)

(I gave myself a bonus for the use of the word “puppygirl”. If they would have also used the words “chew toy” I may have had to just drink directly from the bottle.)

These four lines were right in a row. That made me lose it.

“Let me be your whore.” 

“Lucky chair whore.”

“I’m coming whore fuck.”

(Wow people. WOW!)

Things I discovered while playing:

1. If you think you are being creative by calling yourself “The Doctor” from Doctor Who you’re not. There are countless people who claim to be The Doctor.

2. 6188 people use the word Bitch in their profile. This will probably completely change every time you look because there seems to be a lot of  ”Bitch” on Second Life.

3. My favorite profile of the day involved an extremely new resident with nothing but “I love monkeys!” in their profile. Don’t we all honey. Don’t we all.

4. I looked up A/S/L today. Age/Sex/Location. You would not believe the number of people who still use it or actually ask people, via their profile, for that information.  I am assuming they are running dial-up & troll chat rooms that involve refreshing to see the conversation.

Since it wouldn’t be an article without some great picture to mold the whole thing together here is a random picture of Christmas Cow wearing a furry hat balancing a bottle of vodka on his nose while it just happens to be snowing. On a beach.

For some the new feeling of a virtual world has finally worn out. Others have watched friends disappear, not come back, or drift away. It makes for a very boring grid existence. Some days I feel that I wouldn’t log in as often if I didn’t have a purpose in my prim life. Writing keeps me going on. If I didn’t have The SLA Review I too would become bored quickly. You have to admit that’s a sad thing.

As for the significant other not coming on as often I have been going through that for quite some time. St. Bishop no longer logs into the grid due to a combination of boredom & lack of a computer that will run Second Life. This makes me wish that someone would come up with an iPad application that involves the full grid so that he could at least log in on occasion to keep me company. His laptop will no longer run it nor will my old computer. Alas, until someone comes up with items for the iPad, I doubt he will be back till I can actually get a new computer (Something I would HATE to do just to run Second Life.)  Hanging out alone at your prim home gets really boring after a while.

Club hoping gets tedious when you run into the same cookie cutter places every time you land. Just shopping is both expensive after a while & should not be the only thing that keeps people on. I have a few recommendations to help keep things fresh & keep boredom at bay.

1. Explore! – There are so many different exciting places that are hidden around the grid. You just have to find them. Pick a keyword & go with it. You never know what you’ll find.

2. Get Involved! – Get involved with a group with similar interests. Role play something you love. Go to discussions involving topics you enjoy. Get involved & it will help you find purpose.

3. It’s All Up To You! – You can either create fun or you can create boredom. It’s up to you to figure out what you want & go for it.

I do want to mention the huge amount of stores that have been around for quite some time that are packing up & leaving. I have, so far, counted five that are closing. This is just ones that I’ve seen in the past two days.  Many are not due to sales as much as it is lack of time do to real life obligations. I wanted to take a second to wish them all the very best. Hopefully, for some, you will find the time in the future to come back.

DON’T PANIC! We are all going to be OK!

It takes a lot to actually get me to write an article about just one club. Usually I just do a club guide on various clubs every Friday to get the party started. It’s not that I am averse to writing about individual club reviews.  The problem is that most clubs I review…suck. There I said it. They suck. For the handful of clubs that don’t suck there are dozens upon dozens that do.

This week I am giving an individual review to a new club named Starsmacked (M) because they just plain don’t suck.

The reason I ended up at Starsmacked is the event they had listed. It was a grand opening that claimed you could dance in “Zero Gravity”. Hmm…Zero gravity eh? I have not seen a club use a lack of gravity to get me to show up. This piqued my interest to the point where I felt I had to go check it out.  Who can resist drinking a martini while floating around in a club?

When I first teleported in I was on a beach. I’ve been to many clubs via the events list where I’ve ended up someplace that is nowhere near the club. This is not the case. Clearly marked on a HUGE sign in front of me is a teleport to the club itself.  (SLurl I have provided is for the dance floor itself. You know me. I like making it simple for everyone.)

When I arrived on the dance floor I was instantly greeted. I wasn’t just greeted & ignored. I was actually talked to. Because these people were so friendly & talkative I ended up spending quite a lot of time there dancing, chatting, & just plain having fun. Weird! Tipsy actually sticking around for more than a few minutes? I did because they made it worth my time.

As for the zero gravity, yes, it does exist. I sat on something that said “zero gravity” & floated around for a while. You can steer yourself around as you float. Something I should have thought about before drinking a LOT of cocktails. Running into things seemed to be my theme.

I recommend trying it out just remember to wear pants if you decide to float around. Hadn’t thought about what I was wearing so I ended up floating around in a dress. Planning before floating people. Very important.

One of the BIGGEST things that impressed me, besides the friendly people, was the fact that there was NO SHOPPING! None! No shopping surrounding the dance floor in any way. This is a big thing to me. I’m here to dance/meet people. I am not here to buy stuff. One of my biggest club turn offs is clubs in malls. Starsmacked  is not in a mall.  Instead of advertisements I am surrounded by decor that fits perfectly into the star/space/zero gravity/fun theme. I raise my martini in toast over a job well done to everyone involved in the design of this club. Keep up the good work!

Club 6 (M)

When I first teleported into the club I was instantly greeted. By multiple people. Cool. Someone actually said hi to me. There are people having conversations with others. This is nice but THEN…IT HITS!

Gestures!

Holy shit. It’s like gestures are raining down upon us with no sign of stopping. It is filling up the screen to the point where no other conversations can be seen. I CANNOT FUCKING STAND IT! Get with the program people. It’s the most mind numbing annoying shit one can use to have a conversation. One or two are fine. I dig it. Using them to the point where there is no way to talk to anyone is ridiculous.

My head is currently hitting my keyboard as I write.

This club makes me feel like I am trapped back in Second Life 5 years ago. Between the woman with the super blinging boots

Check Out Mr. Ankles Behind Ms. Bling

and the decor I feel that they haven’t moved forward with any modern or, for lack of a better word, good designs.  It’s so basic it boggles the mind. Their decorating color is blue. I mean this place is blue. Really blue. Super duper mega blue. How much more blue could this club possibly be? I am afraid to ask that question for fear they might throw in a bit more blue.

Club is surrounded by a shopping but at least the bonus part is that is isn’t KEERRR PLOWWW right on top of the dance floor. At least we have that going for us.

Iron Fist & Mall (A)

I would like to call it “Iron Fist & (OH GOODY!) A Mall”. It didn’t inform me of the mall part in the events advertisement so I did not know it was there until I rezzed in & saw the full name.

When I first teleported in someone instantly told me to come in when I rezzed. Thank you for noticing me. I waited for a bit till I could actually see the crowd of people dancing around. They went for the apocalyptic yellow polluted dark skies. Nice when you are trying to go for a certain feel/look to match a place.

Someone Get Me An Oxygen Tank STAT! I'm Going In!

I may have possibly been the one chick wearing more clothing than anyone else in the joint. (It is Adult so there was a lot of “barely there” going on. Nothing we already didn’t know. I just couldn’t help but notice. I sometimes stick out in crowds like a beacon.)

People did talk to me a the beginning but it kinda went pfftt after that for me. Which is cool. I want to see if people are having conversations with others (Which there was). I look for no gaps or boring silence. I am here to see how fast it takes them to greet newcomers & see if  people are actually talking to each other.

Sometimes it makes you feel kinda left out but meh. It is what it is.

Forbidden Treasures Club (M)
When I walked through the door there was an age detector that screamed my age. WHAT….THE FUCK! That just came out of nowhere. It will be five years for me in less than a month but I feel bad for new people. That’s bullshit. It’s hard enough to find yourself new on Second Life but then to have a club scream it out to everyone is just plain wrong. What exactly is the point? My opinion: It’s fucking stupid.

Everyone gave me a friendly greeting but I am confused.

Super confused.

Where is the dance floor exactly?

It’s basically a HUGE stripper related catwalk with poles where a shitload of employees dance.
So..we stand around and watch them? What the hell are we suppose to do exactly?  There is one guy here that doesn’t work for them that is just doing this sort of pondering look while wearing a nice suit (it is a nice suit.) Another guy is in a corner with this sort of lost look going on.

OK…I haven’t drank nearly enough to figure this out. This is so stupid. There are chairs around like we are actually supposed to sit down & watch them party. Why in the hell would I want to watch other people party, have fun, & watch employee conversations?  Add one person that has this ray of rave light going on that matches the decor & I give up. I am out of here.

Wild & Crazy Coconut (M)

Been around since 2007  but I have never heard of this club. Not that I can recall.

I got hit up with two group invites AND a landmark as soon as I landed. I can’t even see where I am yet & I’m getting hit with rapid gunfire of stuff. GRRRAAAAAHHHHHHHFFUUUCKKKHH!  Let me rez in before you start bombarding me with loads of crap.

So…here I am. In the middle of a beach shack mall. Surrounded by shops.
A good bonus is the fact that there is a sign on the sand with an arrow pointing me to the direction of said club. I’m hiking. Still hiking. Hiking..hiking…holy shit..NO I DONT WANT TO SHOP. I have never wanted to give up walking to a club so much as I have wanted to right then. Alas I cannot give up because I must find it. Must find it so I can write about it for you. The things I do.

The club, when you actually make it, isn’t too bad (SLurl will take you right to the dance floor so you are not stuck spending a virtual eternity hiking.) After taking a prim breath people said hello. The club itself isn’t too bad if you can actually make it there without dying in a mall maze.

I feel like I am repeating myself at every club but, once again, I really hate the overuse of gestures. Come up with your own shit people!

Bound Addictions Nightclub (M)

This has to be the EASIEST review I have EVER written when it comes to writing a bad review about a place. At least they have that going for them.

When I first teleported in I was, yes you guessed it, a mall. The event listing didn’t mention a mall but…OH NO WAY…the name of the club actually has “& mall” in it. Who would have thunk it?

I stood there for a few minutes saying to myself “Where the hell is the club?”. Directions were so bad that someone who worked for the club actually had to teleport me to where I needed to be. When I did get there & things rezzed in I finally saw that I was actually dancing in the mall itself. No separate club really. Just a spot to dance while being surrounded by shopping.

Ask yourself this people. Would you want to go to a place in real life mall & dance while being surrounded by “StarClucks” or “Ambercorny & Figs”? (Like what I did there?) Surround yourself with places trying to get you to constantly buy while you are trying to have fun? No? I didn’t think you would.

People people. THIS kind of dance shit is unacceptable. If we wouldn’t dance in a place like this in real life what makes you actually think we would want to do it virtually? This is Second Life. You actually CAN dream better. Dont settle. Go for what you want. If they don’t make it build it. You CAN make a place that’s much better then this swill you are trying to hand us. You can do this!

After this bout of club hopping I majorly need a drink. I think, after reading these reviews, we have learned two important lessons.

1. Clubs In Malls SUCK!

2. Over Use Of Gestures Is INSANE!

I hope this has helped you to figure out where you want to spend your club hopping weekend. Me? I’m going to get another cocktail, take a deep breath, & keep on hopping around.

Tipsy’s Curse Count: Boy..I sure did curse a lot in this article today. My count, & I may have missed a few is…..counting my GAAAHHHHHHFUCKKKK….ELEVEN! Wow! Eleven curse words. This weeks club review really pushed my buttons.

I’m not knocking SL families in any way. I think it’s pretty neat how people build up families in a virtual world & find a special kind of bonding love that a lot of people wish they had in real life. It’s just not my thing. More power to you!

Anyways…back to my story…

So I ended up landing in the family park area of CCC which is small but amazingly well put together. After accepting the windlight settings for the area (I totally forgot to write down what they were. My bad.) I was amazed at how brightly decorated & well designed it actually was. Like their notecard, which I received while wandering around, it actually feels like a nice spring day where you just have to picnic. It’s great for couples, families, or just you to sit around & role play a beautiful day by the lake. You can grab a group of friends for a BBQ or maybe sit on the dock & feed the ducks. If you get bored from all of the lounging there is mini golf (free) for you to enjoy.

DUCKS!

Amazed by the fact that I had stumbled into a G rated family area put together by a store & was enjoying the way the place was presented I started to wander around a bit. Over a small bridge I found myself inside of a small shopping village. This pretty pastel shopping area wasn’t filled with stores just trying to sell me stuff (For that I am grateful as I don’t have a need to buy anything family/child related nor do I enjoy constantly ending up in a mall). I wandered into one shop called “Miss. Priss Beauty Salon”. It’s exactly how it sounds. A salon for families/individuals/children to come in & role play a day of beauty. You can set up an appointment for someone to come in & take care of your virtual needs. I have to admit that is a pretty awesome deal. Think of how much fun it would be to grab a couple of your girl friends & get haircuts/nails done together. You could role play beauty salon gossip. It would be a completely different kind of fun rather than club hopping or just plain shopping. I might have to find a few people who want to check out the experience with me.

After checking out the salon I wandered next door for an ice cream cone. How can you resist ice cream with no calories? You just can’t do it!

Tipsy Happy Over Virtual Ice Cream

There is just so much to do on this sim. A PG movie theater, bowling alley/arcade/diner housed in one nice building, a princess carnival (as well as the store itself).  It is well worth wandering around to see what all they have to offer. Sometimes a place that is built by a store can actually give you more than just shopping. Especially if you don’t plan on doing any. It’s rare but when you find it it’s a pretty good thing.

You Want Something?

I, amazingly enough, enjoyed wandering around. Some days a random teleport someplace you didn’t think you would enjoy might actually surprise you.

CCC at Butterfly Kisses is a PG sim. This means, & the rules are also stated in a note card on the sim, that you must act, dress, & speak (via text or voice) PG at all times. No nudity or partial nudity. No weapons. No cussing. No harassment or griefing. 

There is more to do then just shop, which I did none of being as I have no need for anything of the sort (BUT I did leave a tip do to the fact that I did use a hair dryer, hang in a diner, eat ice cream, & relax in the park). I recommend checking out this pastel G area (just be sure to follow the rules people) because it is a nice clean break from the ho hum of Second Life. Be sure to take a friend as it’s always more fun with more than just one. 

To have your hair/nails done at the salon by appointment it does cost. The prices, according to a sign in the shop, are 200L for each. It is a role-playing salon so if you actually want new hair or nails the price of the items will be added to your bill. 

The diner is self-serve or full RP dining. The notecard informed me that there was full RP dining but I did not see any prices in the diner for this service. You may have to contact someone for more information if you are interested.

Huzzah!

This week was just too damn easy. It combines my hatred of baggy turkey thigh pants, ass flapping in the wind, OVER attempt at high fashion, AND putty face. I couldn’t have asked for a better present. Just give me a moment to rub my hands together in an evil scientist fashion with glee over the opportunity to share these things which annoy me with the world.

I am not exactly sure if I should start with the front or the back. They are both equally filled with sloppy SLupidity. Let’s go back to front baby. Awww yeaaahhhh!

I have taken the liberty of placing a few points of interest on each picture so that we may properly discuss them.

COME ON! LOOK AT THOSE FUCKING PANTS!

I cannot seem to get away from these ass disaster things they attempt to call pants. They are the most expensive non-ass covering, hammer pants wanna be, turkey leg disasters in SL fashion that you will EVER SEE. I cannot possibly think of anything that looks worse than these pants.

Jeans where there is no butt just a big hole. Those are pretty bad.

Anywho.

There is absolutely no reason why one would need to make their ass into more than just an ass. Second Life is equip with things like land ownership where you can place your items. An inventory to store your items. There is no need to make your ass so big that you can store things on it like a shelf.

Friends don’t let friends walk outside with an ass that big.

The sandals. Oh..Oh…those sandals. Do we really need to point out that they are gladiator hideous? Do we really?

We are back to once again mentioning those damn pants. The pants that piss me off. I’ll be brief & sum it up in three words.

I think that we do need to take a moment of silence to mourn the loss of Mr. Fluff the chipmunk who recently lost his prim life so this avatar could wear him around as a mouth accessory.

I really wish that I could have shared the droopy eyed funky mouthed face this avatar is sporting but to protect them from harassment (and me from having people write “Angry Notecards” & stuffing my mailbox) I cannot.

I am unsure of the nails that Ms. “Fashion Forward” is sporting. They look like they could be used to chop veggies, unlock doors, scrape off old paint from a wall, AND back alley “knife” fight. Is that a pen in her hand. A smoke? A piece of piping? Maybe a candle? I don’t know. I also don’t really care enough to find out.

Why you so skinny Ms. Prim thang? Did someone decide to stop prim eating & abuse the sliders controlling your avatars shape? You might need to seek help for this problem. Do it, not just for you, for all of us so that our eyesight may no longer be blinded by your stick thin yet strangely disproportioned large ass. Thank you.
